Rory Southwell | Macarthur BMX
16 year old, Rory Southwell, was named the Wests Sports Council Elite Sports Person of the Year 2020 following a fantastic year which saw him overcome major injury, compete on the world stage and take home a suite of great wins and notable awards.
A fierce competitor on the BMX Track, Rory was nominated by Macarthur BMX following a very successful season in a very competitive age group filled with outstanding personal achievements.
Rory ticked of numerous sporting goals he set for himself, included that to defend his NSW state title win from the previous year, which he did giving him his third state title victory. Rory also came third in the Australian National and NSW Series respectively and took home 2nd and 3rd placements in several NSW open events.
Rory is getting to the top of his game. The winner of the Macarthur BMX Club Junior male rider of the year and South West Sydney academy of sport award for sportsperson of the year, a highlight was going on to represent Australia at the 2019 World BMX championships in Belgium. Rory is a passionate young rider with great determination and a worthy winner of the Elite Sports person of the year award.
“This is an honour and I would just like congratulate my fellow nominees on their outstanding achievements, and to thank Macarthur BMX and Wests Group Macarthur for all of their support,” stated an excited Rory upon accepting his award.

U14’S C&DNA Representative team
The U14’s Camden and Districts Netball team have built a strong bond and have a collective commitment and desire to achieve at a high standard every time. The team is made up of exceptional young players, many of whom have played together for over 2 years and features many who have been selected to represent Camden District Netball Association at the annual NSW State titles.
Achievements include placing third in the state in 2018 & 2019 and first in the 2019 C&DNA Representative carnival. Fantastic achievements for both the individuals and the team.
Representative Tracey Anderson comments “They have a great team dynamic, are disciplined, have a strong work ethic and want to perform well every time. They should be so proud and are outstanding role models for any other young female athletes.”

Peter Phillips – Ingleburn RSL Softball Club
Peter Phillips has been a member of Ingleburn RSL Softball Club for 4 years and within those 4 years he has dedicated his time to coaching, umpiring, and inspiring the players.
In addition to being involved on the field as a coach and umpire, Peter is a valued member of the ground crew team, giving up countless hours to ensure the ground is in perfect condition and well maintained and that the ground is marked and game ready every time. Peter is known for being one of the first at the ground in the early hours of game days and one of the last people to leave that evening. Peter is the coach of the U8’s Tee-ball team and acts as Umpire across up to 3 other matches most weeks, even playing within his own game of softball through the day. Peter shows a true commitment to the team, our field and the game overall having a great impact and involvement in all aspects of our sport.

Jack McGrath – Group 6 Referees
Jack McGrath was destined to be a great young referee. He begun refereeing with Group 6 in 2014, and in that year won Runner Up Rookie of the Year in Group 6 and was appointed U14A touch line Referee in the Grand Final.
In the years that followed and amongst other achievements, Jack was selected for the Canterbury Referees Exchange and Immortals Cup Semi Final Referee, was a Grand Final Touch Judge and has been in various Grand final Centre appointments. He was also chosen to represent in the CRL Development Squad.
In 2018, Jack took his refereeing to the next level, appointed to his initial First Reserve Grade Centre, and selected to participate in the NRL High Performance Academy. Jack was able to cap off an excellent year winning the International Referee of the year 2018 and the most prestigious award in Group 6, the Brett Meredith Award.
The 2019 season was another great year for Jack and saw him selected in the NRL Emerging Talent Academy and the CRL Junior Representative Squad.
He is currently refereeing reserve grade in Group 6, a role he tackles with a strong commitment and has developed his skill from a fresh 14-year-old referee to an accomplished young adult referee who will no doubt progress to the top.

Division 6 Campbelltown Thunder Netball Club
The Campbelltown Thunder Netball club has one every game they have played this year! Having played together since 2017, the 2019 Season saw the original team together once again, deciding this was the year to push themselves and walk away winners – together! Undefeated minor premiers in 2018, the team had set their sights early on the same achievement in 2019 even placing themselves 2 divisions higher.
Whilst the success has been the highlight of the season, these ladies have been faced with some adversity with several injuries over the season including hand, shoulder and hamstring injuries but have pushed on.
“We don’t let these injuries get us down though, we just continue to rally behind each to other more determined for the win each game, for each other”
The team have a great attitude, encouraging each other, having fun, and backing each other on and off the court every week. The strong bond between the players and ability to read each other helps them anticipate where the pass needs to be in attack and where the opposition will move to when defending. They all help each other to move the ball from one end of the court to the other and apply whole court defence that has proven to be a winning formula.
These ladies from the Division 6 Team are the true epitome of what it means to be a team.

WINNER Youth Sportsperson of the year (12-16YR) 2020
Andrew Salian – Magpies Cricket Club
Batter and Bowler, Andrew Salian has had a fantastic year continuing his tremendous form from the season prior. In the 2018-2019 season, Andrew took home the season’s Best Batting average & aggregate and was awarded the Magpies Cricket Club Under 12-15 Player of the Year. He also won the Best Batting award at the CDCA Junior District Awards.
Playing in the Under 14 cricket team this season, Andrew’s batting has been exceptional with a season average of 420 and scoring 3 Centuries not out in 4 innings.
However it is not only his batting that is impressive, he has produced fantastic results from his bowling and fielding taking averaging 15 runs per wicket and boasting an economy rate of 2.4 runs per over as well as taking 3 catches over the season.
In the plate semi-final he continued his great form batting a top score of 79, taking one wicket and one catch and in taking 3 wickets for 4 runs & 1 catch in the grand final.
He is an impressive young player who not only has had outstanding performance year on year, he always shows a great spirit for playing and supporting his teammates.

WINNER Junior Sportsperson of the year (U 12) 2020
Alexandra Northdufter – Mt Annan Swim Club
9-year old, Alexandra is described as “a little pocket rocket”. A member of Mount Annan Swim Club for the past 3 years, Alex is an outstanding swimmer, training 3-4 days a week in the development Squad team and seriously kicking goals in the water under Head Coach Joe Grant.
Having recently competed in the Metro South West Short Course Championships, Alexandra took part in 9 events absolutely smashing her personal best times each time. Alex took home a suite of wins including first in under 100m backstroke, second in the 100m freestyle, second in the 100m breaststroke and second in the 100m butterfly and was also a part of freestyle and medley relay teams, placing second and third in these events. To top her fantastic results in that competition, Alex achieved 6 Short Couse State record times for the 10 and under girls age group.
Alex now holds State times in the 50m butterfly and breaststroke events as well as the 100m backstroke, freestyle, butterfly, and breaststroke events. Alex will be competing in these events later this year in September at the Junior Age State Short Course Championships.
Mt Annan Swim Club credits Alex with improving every time she enters the water and for being a determined, focused and dedicated young lady and for being humble & gracious of all her achievements.
